The chamber that has been built is about 22 metres long and can carry out continuous tests 24 hours a day. The time required to certify the efficiency of the refrigeration equipments is 48 hours. The user can get certification in four working days, with it being one of the most advanced facilities in Europe and one that can offer certification in a shorter period.
The Cold Laboratory installed in the Espíritu Santo centre (Sada, A Coruña), will work under a trial basis until the Ministry authorises the certification of the vehicles.
At SYC PTI we have been able to achieve this thanks to the collaboration between the Ministry of Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia, a complete breakthrough to support manufacturers and transporters of refrigerated lorries, which until now, had to pass inspections and renew their vehicle certificates in other parts of Spain or Portugal. The laboratory will analyse the degree of insulation of the vehicles that request this and responds to a current need, because in Galicia there are over 12,000 vehicles that transport perishable goods. Thus, the facility will meet the needs of the entire Northwest area. In addition, it is possible that other applicants may come here, since it will reduce travel costs, downtime of vehicles and time for the appointment for inspections. Currently, in Spain there are three cold tunnels working, located in Getafe, Linares and Tarragona, although the latter is limited to vans and small lorries.
